The "Lap-Band System" is the brand name of the FDA-approved, adjustable gastric band used in the Lap-Band procedure. A Lap-Band is a silicone belt or collar very much like a wristwatch that goes around the upper part of the stomach. This procedure usually performed through small incisions in the stomach using a camera. This minimally invasive and reversible surgery usually results in minimal discomfort and time off. This procedure takes around 60-90 minutes. After this procedure stomach will be roughly the size of golf ball, and will be able to hold an ounce of food. The Lap-Band System is adjustable. It is connected to a port that sits underneath the skin. This port can be inflated with saline to tighten it and accelerate weight loss. Saline can also be removed to loosen the band and ease side effects, if necessary.

Lap Band surgery is ideal for those who have been struggling with chronic obesity for many years. A good candidate for lap band surgery has a BMI of 40 or higher (morbidly obese), or a BMI of at least 35 with obesity co-morbidities, or is at least 100 pounds overweight (if a male) and 80 pounds overweight (if a female).
