Ovarian Cyst - Laparoscopic

An ovarian cyst is a sac or pouch that develops in or on the ovary. The cysts may contain liquid or solid material or a combination of both. Ovarian cysts are very common, particularly in women between the ages of 30 and 60. They may be single or multiple, and can occur in one or both ovaries. Most are benign (non-cancerous), but approximately 15 percent are malignant (cancerous).

 

There are 5 types of ovarian cysts: functional cysts, polycystic ovaries, endometrial cysts, cystadenomas and dermoid cysts.

 

Laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery is one of the methods to treat ovarian cyst. Surgeon makes two or three small cuts on your lower abdomen. Your surgeon will insert a Laparoscope (a tube-like telescopic camera) to view the cysts. Your surgeon may also pass a metal instrument called a 'sound' through your cervix. The cysts are cut and removed using specially designed surgical instruments passed through the other skin cuts. The skin cuts are closed with dissolvable stitches.

 

After the surgery, you will need to rest until the effects of the anesthetic wear off. You may need pain relief to help with any discomfort afterwards.

 

You may have a catheter to drain urine from your bladder into a bag. It's usually removed within 24 hours. You will usually be able to go home when you feel ready. You must rest for 1-2 days after the surgery and no strenuous activity should be done.
