Ghent University Hospital
The Ghent University Hospital is one of the largest health care providers in Flanders . It has a capacity of more than 1000 beds for acute care and extensive services for ambulatory diagnosis, treatment and care.
Patients come to the hospital for all kinds of treatments, from sports injuries to organ transplantations. Annually, about 30.000 patients are admitted and 400.000 outpatients are treated.
As a university centre, the hospital offers a wide range of high-quality primary and specialised care. Every medical specialism for normal and intensive care is represented. The medical department comprises about 48 different services.
Scientific research
The treatment of patients is supported by scientific research in close collaboration with the Faculty of Medicine of the Ghent University. In well-equipped laboratories numerous researchers develop new methods of treatment and diagnosis, that can later be applied in medicine: the N. Goormaghtigh institute for normal and pathological anatomy, the Heymans institute of pharmacodynamics and therapy, the laboratory of bacteriology and virology, medical genetics, social health care and the department of hygiene and social medicine.
Education
The hospital is closely involved in teaching as a result of the close relationship with the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of the Ghent University . Trainee medical specialists and dentists receive a high-quality and very practical education. The faculty grants diplomas to about 120 doctors and dentists every year.
The campus also houses a training centre for general practitioners. In addition, nurses, dieticians, speech therapists and physical therapists from various institutions receive their practical training at the University Hospital in Ghent .
In 1938 Cornelis Heymans, a former professor of the Medical Faculty, received the prestigious Nobel Prize
Offering services
Our mission also consists in providing social and scientific services, based on the competence of our employees. Hospital representatives seat as experts in various councils and committees. We also give advice to other hospitals and put our technology at their disposal.
Our main concern goes to providing the best care to patients . Every day, all the doctors, nurses, technical and administrative employees are devoted to the patient's care, treatment and comfort.
Evolution of the hospital
From the start in 1959, the hospital has constantly been expanding. Today, the Ghent University Hospital has become one of the leading teaching hospitals in the country. The hospital is constantly investing in employees as well as in infrastructure, medical equipment and computer science.
